이번 전시에서 ‘능혜’는 이전보다 더욱 선명한 형상으로 등장한다. 나무와 산, 꽃과 잎 등 자연의 이미지들은 단순한 재현이 아니라, 시간과 생명의 순환을 상징하는 심연의 표식들이다. 완전히 해체된 추상 이후 약 10년 만에 다시 모습을 드러낸 이 형상들은, 추상과 구상의 경계를 넘나들며 화면 안에서 서로 연결된다. 특히 하나의 줄기로 이어진 꽃의 형상은 끊임없이 생성되고 소멸하는 생명의 흐름을 암시한다.
백미옥의 회화는 마치 석공이 돌 속에 잠들어 있는 형상을 끌어내듯, 붓과 물감이라는 물질적 행위를 통해 내면 깊은 곳의 이미지를 현실로 드러낸다. 화면 위에 수없이 교차하며 쌓여가는 색의 층, 거칠고도 밀도 높은 붓질의 흔적, 그 안에서 피어나는 깊은 울림은 생명의 영원성과 맞닿아 있다.
‘능혜’는 진흙 속에서 뿌리를 견디며 물 위로 줄기를 밀어 올려 끝내 작은 꽃을 피워내는 마름꽃을 닮아 있다. 그것은 고통과 침묵, 인내와 희열의 시간을 통과하며 마침내 스스로를 피워내는 존재의 형상이다. 백미옥은 이번 전시를 통해 삶과 예술, 물질과 정신, 현재와 영원을 연결하는 깊은 사유의 풍경을 펼쳐 보인다. 그리고 그 끝에서 피어난 ‘능혜’는 또 다른 생명의 시간으로 이어지며, 오래도록 우리 안에 잔향처럼 머무를 것이다.
In this exhibition, Neunghye emerges in forms far more distinct than before. Images of trees, mountains, flowers, and leaves are not mere representations of nature, but profound signs symbolizing the circulation of time and life. Appearing again for the first time in nearly a decade after the artist’s complete dissolution into abstraction, these forms move fluidly across the boundary between abstraction and figuration, intertwining within the canvas. In particular, the flowers connected by a single stem evoke the perpetual flow of life—its endless cycles of generation and disappearance.
Paik Mee Ok’s paintings resemble the process of a sculptor chiseling hidden forms out of stone. Through the material acts of brush and pigment, she draws forth images buried deep within the self into visible reality. Layers of color endlessly crossing and accumulating upon the surface, together with the dense and vigorous traces of brushwork, create resonant depths that seem to touch upon the eternity of life itself.
Neunghye recalls the water chestnut flower, which endures within murky depths before slowly extending its stem above the water to finally bloom into a small white flower. It is the image of a being that passes through pain and silence, patience and ecstasy, ultimately bringing itself into bloom. Through this exhibition, Paik Mee Ok unfolds a profound landscape of contemplation that connects life and art, material and spirit, the present and eternity. And the “Neunghye” that blossoms at the end of this journey continues into another cycle of life, lingering within us like a lasting resonance.
